Flag Collection & Retirement

The Boy and Girl Scouts Honor our Flag

This year some 1800+ flags were retired including 2 huge Garrison-sized flags

Many of you have seen the retired American flag collection boxes located in several locations in Grass Valley: B&C Ace Hardware, Riebes Napa Auto Parts, Hills Flat Lumber, Grass Valley Police Department, Veterans Service Office, and Patriots Point in the McKnight’s Center.

People have asked about the flag collection process. The flags are collected monthly by Diana Runnels, of "A Flag's Legacy" and Nevada County VSO volunteer, sometimes more than once during the month, are stored until Veterans Day/Military Appreciation Week each November, when the Scouts perform the official retirement ceremony of no longer “serviceable flags” on November 11th, “…to clean and purge by flame…” flags that are “…worn out in worthy service.”

Thank you all who are ensuring that your flags are properly retired.
