Armed Forces Day 2024

Armed Forces Day has been officially celebrated here for the past two years. We are one of the few areas in the State honoring our active & current Military. While the event has been successful, we will be looking to make the 2024 event ....OFF SCALE.
The County, City of Grass Valley, The Chamber, Post 130 and the Golden Empire Flying Association have teamed up to stage the 2024 event at the Airport.
Not only will we have flyovers, we will have walk throughs. There will be aircraft you can actually ride in. There will be classic vehicles, Military and otherwise.... parked along with current vehicles and equipment. There will be food, fun, music.
And?

Stay tuned for further details & surprises! For now pencil in Saturday, May 18th 2024.

Thanks to Tim O’Brien for the Photos

We need your help!

The Post needs some help providing bar services. This is not a full time job but a routine job. Helping with bowling events, occasional dinners, and social events. Please contact John Madeiros about the details on what’s needed and how you can help.

John has been the Post’s treasurer for several years now. He needs a breather because not only does he volunteer here but also with other organizations and he runs his own accounting business! How about talking to him about assisting with or taking over his duties here at Post 130. Call John at 530 273 4988

Fellow Veterans

Veteran’s Day is a month away. Memories for all of us are stirred every day but brought to focus on this day. Maybe it’s a good memory. .Your buddies and you accomplishing something thought undoable. Maybe it’s a not so good smell or flash? Every single one of us feels the pain and grief of losing one of our fellow veterans.

If you need help, if you are in pain, if you simply need someone to talk with to get through this, contact one of our organizations. We are here to help. Your country needs you as it did during your service. Let’s get past this together and continue to help build this great nation.

God Bless You

Talent Update

This has grown in the past few weeks so let’s bring you up to date... While the idea originally was to stage this in 2023 a few different communities have gotten wind of what we are trying to do. They want to be involved. They want to help by incorporating such an event into their facilities and planned 2024 events. I would estimate that we will stage this in early Spring 2024. Keep working on that talent of yours. Be prepared to show off. Keep dialed in to the updates.

Lou Conter

I have to believe that the majority of you know Lou’s story. For those of you new to the Post and area, Lou is the only remaining survivor of the attack on the Arizona at Pearl Harbor. Lou continued his service to our Country, including the Vietnam war, creating and instructing training on how to survive behind enemy lines. I would suggest if Lou and his history is new to you, check out one the publications about his life. You can help honor and celebrate Lou by wishing him a Happy Birthday. Send your birthday wishes to Lou by sending an e mail or snail mail to THE UNION newspaper. All your birthday wishes will be published on Wednesday September 13th.

You can email to News@theunion.com, with the "Birthday Wish" in the title of the email ,and if anyone wanted to stop by the UNION in person or send by snail mail would be to
The Union , 464 Sutton Way, Attn: Editor

Got Art in you? Play music? Can you Sing? Sculpt? Quilt? Take Photos? Write Poetry?

A Few years back “Image Nation” helped local veterans learn and improve their photography skills. Several came up with some great results and art like Jason Tedder and Oral Stallings. Navy Vet Ray Yedding produces wood art. Canes, bread boards and model cars to name but a few. We’ve got a wide range of musicians from singers to drummers to guitarists. Some of us love the water color, acrylic and oil mediums. I know there are a few metal sculptors and cloth artists. It goes on and on.

Join us with your creations, have some great BBQ, and enjoy the live music. $5 per veteran gets you lunch, entered and a chance to win $250!! Bring a Vet supporter for just $1

There is a PG&E alternative!

I swear this is the honest truth.... PG&E had a truck parked in the Vet building rear parking lot about 30 min before our “Pioneer Community Energy” meeting was to start. The PG&E person did not move from the truck until 10 min before the meeting was to begin. He moved, the power to the building went out, he got back in the truck and left. No lights, internet or A.C. 10min after the meeting was scheduled to begin, the power came back on.

I’m just sayin’ folks!!!!!

I think if you live in the Grass Valley or Nevada City limits you’ll want to investigate “Pioneer Community Energy”. People at this meeting living in areas currently served by them had good things to say. In early August the Board of Supervisors will review their proposal to cover the entire County.

Check Pioneer Community Energy or call (844) yes - pioneer

I had the honor and privilege of being asked to sit on an Eagle Badge award/review committee this past month. Pictured here is Bryce who designed, engineered, raised funds for and managed a build team in Browns Valley to construct a sports court for use by the community. His parents and Scout masters had nothing but compliments for troop 232’s team leader.

The other news? Bryce has enlisted in the Army and will head off to boot camp in the Fall. His goal is to become a Ranger and attend OCS.

The owners of the refurbished McKnight Center will be creating “Patriots Point” on the South East side of the center near the new flag pole & flying colors we’ve all seen. “Patriots Point” will honor our first responders and military by placing monuments and plaques representing each service. It will be a gathering area . The Post will join in on the planning of the event to introduce the area. Stay tuned!

I’ve been in contact with Congressman Kevin Kiley’s staff recently. The Congressman is very interested in a face to face meeting with the Veterans of Nevada County. While I do not have a concrete day & time established, due in part to the budget negotiations hang ups and voting required, Post 130 is hosting the event and we are tentatively shooting for the end of June. The target days are Fridays the 23rd or 30th or Mondays the 19th or 26th. The meeting will be held in the morning on one of those dates at 10 - 11am. We’ll have some coffee and treats available and make it a comfortable gathering & meeting. This will be a face to face conversation. Answer questions, ask questions, make suggestions hear the response do the planning and next steps. While the Legion will host the event all Veterans from all organizations and generations are welcome to participate. This is not a political event. This is an event to demonstrate why America is great, why America is great because of her Veterans, the Men and Women who dedicated at least part of their lives to making life better for every citizen.

Keep you posted as we move forward.
